PrivadoVPN: Free Tier Shines, Paid Plan Falls Short

PrivadoVPN has an impressive free version, but the premium plan is underwhelming and doesn’t stand out in any single area. Despite fast speeds and solid streaming performance, it’s overpriced and lacks extra security features and server locations compared to competing VPNs. Both versions are safe to use, but only the free plan is clearly worth it.

Cons

Expensive subscription plans

PrivadoVPN offers a commendable free version, delivering fast speeds and the ability to unblock US Netflix.

However, its premium service lacks advanced features like multi-hop connections, Smart DNS, and browser extensions, and it doesn’t excel in any particular category.

While the apps run smoothly without noticeable slowdowns, the premium plan doesn’t unlock more streaming sites than the free version.

Given its higher price than competitors, we recommend PrivadoVPN Free for basic needs and suggest exploring other VPNs for more comprehensive features.

Alternatives to PrivadoVPN

If PrivadoVPN doesn’t meet your needs, consider these options:

  1. Windscribe: Offers a similar free plan with a 10GB monthly data cap and access to free servers. It ranks higher for privacy and unblocks many streaming sites. See our Windscribe review.
  2. PIA: Priced significantly lower than PrivadoVPN and a better performer overall. See our PIA review.

Privacy

Free6.4/10
Paid6.4/10

PrivadoVPN has a reasonable privacy policy and does not log sensitive or personally identifiable data. It’s based in Switzerland, a strong privacy jurisdiction. However, it only scores 6.4/10 because it logs individual bandwidth usage and device information. The company has also not substantiated its claims through an independent audit, transparency reports, or a warrant canary.

Originating IP Address No
Browsing Activity No
Individual Connection Timestamps No
Date of Last Connection No
VPN Server IP No
Device Information Yes
Individual Bandwidth Usage Yes
Account Information Yes

PrivadoVPN collects a small amount of information, and none of it is identifiable. It doesn’t log your IP address or the websites you visit.

However, this is not a true no-logs policy, and the data it collects appears to be stored indefinitely. VPNs like Private Internet Access deliver an excellent service without storing any user information at all.

PrivadoVPN loses points in our privacy assessment because it’s relatively new to the market and hasn’t done enough to verify its privacy claims and build user trust.

PrivadoVPN could improve by commissioning an independent audit of its policy. It could also publish regular transparency reports detailing legal requests and how it responds to them. A warrant canary would help, too.

Is PrivadoVPN Trustworthy?

The company behind PrivadoVPN is legitimate, and we appreciate that it is based in Switzerland, which has no data retention laws and respects consumer privacy. It is not in the European Union, so it is not subject to the Data Retention Directive.

Switzerland is also outside the Five Eyes and 14 Eyes alliances, as well as other intelligence-sharing agreements. In other words, PrivadoVPN is under no legal obligation to store or share user data.

For these reasons, we consider PrivadoVPN trustworthy. However, there is no public information about the company’s ownership. We want PrivadoVPN to build further trust by releasing transparency reports and commissioning audits of its logging policy.

Streaming

Free4.3/10
Paid6.1/10

PrivadoVPN unblocks major streaming services, including US Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu. The free version performs just as well in our streaming tests and is the best free VPN for US Netflix. However, access to BBC iPlayer and ITVX is inconsistent on both plans. Even when a platform works, not all servers are reliable.

PrivadoVPN Paid & Free Works with US Netflix

Both versions of PrivadoVPN can unblock US Netflix from anywhere. In our recent tests, the paid plan also unblocked Netflix in France, Israel, Turkey, and the UK.

PrivadoVPN works with US Netflix and more

PrivadoVPN works with US Netflix and more.

This is still far fewer libraries than top competitors — Windscribe, for instance, unblocks 32. The inability to access Japanese Netflix is disappointing, but consistent access to the US catalog is a major perk.

This is especially valuable for PrivadoVPN Free, one of the few free VPNs that unblocks Netflix and the only free VPN we’ve tested that accesses US Netflix on desktop devices.

However, the 10GB monthly data cap on the free plan severely limits how much you can stream.

Works with HBO Max, Disney+ & Hulu

Both the paid and free versions also unblock US services like HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, and US Amazon Prime Video.

PrivadoVPN Free unblocks HBO Max and more georestricted streaming sites

PrivadoVPN Free unblocks HBO Max and more georestricted streaming sites.

Because it reliably unblocks US Netflix and other sites, PrivadoVPN is the best free VPN for streaming overall, with Windscribe Free a close second.

BBC iPlayer Access Is Inconsistent

PrivadoVPN didn’t unblock BBC iPlayer on its Manchester server, though it briefly worked on its London server. When we tested again shortly after, the BBC detected our true location.

PrivadoVPN didn’t unblock BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer detected that we were using PrivadoVPN to watch British TV.

PrivadoVPN also failed to access ITVX. However, Channel 4 worked from abroad, including on PrivadoVPN Free. Overall, fans of British TV should choose a UK VPN that reliably unblocks all major British platforms.

Speed

Free9.3/10
Paid8.7/10

Both versions of PrivadoVPN are very fast. We recorded only a 7% speed loss on same-country connections. Long-distance performance is also strong; connecting to the UK from the US cost us just 10% of our normal speed despite 3,500 miles of distance. However, PrivadoVPN still isn’t as fast as the top performers like Hotspot Shield. Based on this data, PrivadoVPN scores 8.7 in our speed evaluation.

We tested PrivadoVPN’s average speeds when connecting to servers on six continents. Here are the full results for PrivadoVPN Premium:

No VPN (New York) US (New York) Canada (Toronto) US (Los Angeles) UK (London) Germany (Berlin) Brazil (São Paulo) Japan (Tokyo) South Africa (Johannesburg) Australia (Sydney)
Server Location
Download Speed 100Mbps 93Mbps 94Mbps 89Mbps 90Mbps 87Mbps 73Mbps 84Mbps 77Mbps 82Mbps
Upload Speed 100Mbps 87Mbps 95Mbps 95Mbps 77Mbps 96Mbps 90Mbps 96Mbps 89Mbps 96Mbps
Ping 1ms 5ms 15ms 68ms 74ms 83ms 161ms 143ms 170ms 212ms
Distance 0mi 5mi 300mi 2,500mi 3,500mi 4,000mi 4,800mi 6,700mi 8,000mi 9,900mi

These results show that PrivadoVPN performs very well across the globe. On local connections, speed loss was a minimal 7%.

International speeds are naturally slower but still more than enough for Full HD streaming, video calls, and even gaming.

For example, connecting to Australia delivered 82Mbps despite nearly 10,000 miles of distance.

PrivadoVPN Free Is Faster than the Pro Version

PrivadoVPN Free performs as well as — and sometimes better than — the paid version in our speed tests.

We recorded local average speeds of 97Mbps on the free plan, which is actually faster than the paid plan.

Its Germany speeds were also higher than the Pro plan, and its long-distance UK speeds were similar at 89Mbps.

This suggests PrivadoVPN does not throttle its free servers, unlike many competitors such as Hide.me Free.

While this is great for free users, paid subscribers may feel short-changed.

Security

Free7.0/10
Paid7.0/10

PrivadoVPN provides solid security with AES-256 encryption and secure protocols like WireGuard and ChaCha, making it safe to use. However, it falls short in some areas — the kill switch isn’t available on iOS, and advanced features like multi-hop are missing.

Independent Audit No
VPN Kill Switch Yes
Leak Protection Yes

Does PrivadoVPN Fully Encrypt Your Data?

We started by checking whether PrivadoVPN encrypts web traffic using the packet-sniffing tool Wireshark.

As shown in our tests, PrivadoVPN successfully encrypted our traffic, so you can trust it to hide your browsing activity from your ISP.

A Selection of Safe Connection Protocols

PrivadoVPN lets you choose among OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2 — the leading secure protocols we expect from any safe VPN.

PrivadoVPN uses IKEv2 by default, but we recommend switching to WireGuard. On macOS, WireGuard isn’t immediately available; it must be manually authorized and installed, which is inconvenient and should be pre-installed.

If you’re on macOS and prefer not to install WireGuard, OpenVPN is the next best option.

WireGuard is not available on macOS

Kill Switch Works, But Not on iOS

We tested PrivadoVPN’s kill switch on all apps to see if it prevents IP exposure.

The kill switch worked perfectly on Windows, macOS, and Android. In earlier tests, our real IP leaked when switching servers, but this has been fixed following our report to PrivadoVPN.

However, there’s no kill switch on iOS, so we advise caution if you use PrivadoVPN on iPhone or iPad.

Server Locations

Free2.7/10
Paid5.5/10

PrivadoVPN has a physical server network spanning 44 countries, with several city options. This is decent, but smaller than top-rated VPNs. The leading services average around 50 countries, and the very best cover 100+ countries. PrivadoVPN is also limited by a relatively small server count — only 322 in total.

Continent PrivadoVPN (Free)
Countries with Servers
PrivadoVPN
Countries with Servers
Europe 5 24
North America 3 3
South America 2 2
Asia 1 12
Africa 0 1
Oceania 0 2

PrivadoVPN’s premium network focuses heavily on Europe, with only one server location in Africa and two in South America. Asia is comparatively well covered, but we’d like to see more locations across all regions.

PrivadoVPN’s server network

PrivadoVPN’s server network is small compared to the competition.

PrivadoVPN’s server network is nowhere near the size of networks offered by top-ranking VPNs.

ExpressVPN scores 9.9 in our server evaluation because it has a larger number of servers across 100 countries, including strong coverage in regions often neglected, like Africa and the Middle East.

Small Network of Physical Servers

PrivadoVPN’s network is smaller partly because it consists exclusively of physical servers. This approach is more expensive and makes it harder to offer IP addresses in countries with less-developed infrastructure.

There are some privacy benefits to physical servers, but as PrivadoVPN’s subscriber base grows, we’re concerned about potential congestion.

PrivadoVPN Offers Free Servers in 11 Countries

PrivadoVPN’s free plan has a much smaller network than the paid version, but 11 countries is generous for a free VPN. Competing free plans from Hotspot Shield Basic, Betternet, and ZoogVPN typically include only 3.

PrivadoVPN offers 4 free US servers

PrivadoVPN offers 4 free US servers.

PrivadoVPN’s free network is refreshingly diverse. Alongside major European and North American locations, it offers IPs in Argentina, Brazil, and India. It’s also the best free VPN for Mexico, and there are four city-level options in the US.

User Experience

Free7.7/10
Paid7.7/10

PrivadoVPN has significantly improved its app design and usability. It offers an approachable, streamlined experience that’s friendly for beginners and consistent across platforms. However, advanced users will want more features and customization, and some options are limited to Windows and Android.

Installation & Setup

Installing PrivadoVPN is straightforward, though there are a few quirks. The download is quick and the installer is small, making it faster than many VPNs like NordVPN or ExpressVPN.

Logging in requires your account email and password, which is standard, but the lack of single sign-on and limited device management feels dated, especially when setting up multiple devices.

Unlike some top-tier VPNs, PrivadoVPN doesn’t auto-configure advanced settings. New users must manually adjust options like Auto Connect and protocol selection after installation. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s less polished than more user-friendly alternatives.

Overall, the setup process is serviceable but not as seamless as leading VPN providers.

Interface & Ease of Use

PrivadoVPN’s apps are clean and easy to navigate, with a large connect button, a server list, and a simple settings menu.

Advanced users may find the apps short on features and customization, and some functionality is exclusive to Windows and Android.

One area to improve is the settings menu, which opens in a separate window. This can feel fragmented and clutter your desktop if you forget to close it.

PrivadoVPN’s apps

On macOS, we liked the “dock to tray” option, which lets you pin the app to the tray or move it around the screen. However, customization is limited — the app can’t be resized, and beyond Auto Connect there are few options.

Windows users benefit from split tunneling, which lets you control which apps and websites use the VPN. Unfortunately, this isn’t available on macOS or iOS, where it would be especially helpful.

Day-to-Day Experience

PrivadoVPN provides a consistent, straightforward experience for everyday use, particularly for users who value simplicity.

While the design is clean and performance is reliable, the lack of advanced features and cross-platform parity leaves room for improvement.

Torrenting

Free6.2/10
Paid6.9/10

PrivadoVPN supports P2P file sharing across its entire network, and premium subscribers get a SOCKS5 proxy. This makes PrivadoVPN a decent option for torrenting. However, its average download bitrate of 7.9MiB/s is slower than leading competitors, and it doesn’t support port forwarding.

Torrenting Attribute PrivadoVPN (Free) PrivadoVPN
Permits P2P Traffic Yes Yes
Average Download Bitrate 5.7MiB/s (43% loss) 7.9MiB/s (21% loss)
Countries with P2P Servers 11 44
Port Forwarding No No
Kill Switch Yes Yes
Logging Policy No Identifiable Data No Identifiable Data

PrivadoVPN’s network supports P2P on all servers, including free locations.

We tested PrivadoVPN with qBittorrent and uTorrent. The average download bitrate of 7.9MiB/s is good, but faster VPNs for torrenting are available.

Premium users can also use a SOCKS5 proxy on every server. This is popular among torrenters for potentially faster speeds and additional anonymity. This feature is not included with PrivadoVPN Free.

Unfortunately, PrivadoVPN does not support port forwarding, which may limit your ability to seed files.

Overall, PrivadoVPN is a good but imperfect choice for torrenting: speeds are decent and no sensitive data is logged, but there’s no iOS kill switch and no port forwarding.

Device Compatibility

Free6.6/10
Paid7.0/10

PrivadoVPN offers apps for most platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It allows 10 simultaneous connections, which is generous, and the Fire TV Stick app has been fixed. However, there’s no Smart DNS and no browser extensions. Manual router installation is available but technical.

Windows Yes
Mac Yes
iOS Yes
Android Yes
Linux No
Amazon Fire TV Yes
Android TV Yes
Apple TV Yes
Router Manual Setup Only
Chrome No

Simultaneous Connections: 10

PrivadoVPN provides manual setup guides for routers and Linux on its website.

The limit of 10 simultaneous connections is sufficient for most households.

However, some competitors like Surfshark and IPVanish do not impose device limits.

It’s also disappointing that PrivadoVPN does not offer Smart DNS, which makes streaming on smart TVs and consoles easier without a VPN app.

Additional Features

Free5.1/10
Paid5.6/10

PrivadoVPN trails top VPNs on extra features. Many competitors now include multi-hop servers, split tunneling across platforms, and 24/7 live chat support as standard. PrivadoVPN lacks these, but it does have some strengths: it sometimes works in China, includes SOCKS support, and offers an ad blocker.

Does PrivadoVPN Work in China?

We tested PrivadoVPN on our Shanghai server and found it can sometimes bypass the Great Firewall.

However, connections in China took a long time to establish. We unblocked YouTube via the Taiwan server, but it took over four minutes to get past Chinese blocks.

PrivadoVPN currently works in China on occasion.

It’s unclear how long this will last without obfuscation technology. Its current success likely stems from a smaller user base. As it grows, Chinese authorities may more easily identify and block it.

If that happens, Astrill VPN is a reliable alternative for China — it bypasses Chinese web blocks consistently.

PrivadoVPN Free used to work in China, but since it now requires users to refresh data each month via its website, users in China cannot renew data because that page is blocked.

It’s rare for a free VPN to work in China, so it’s unfortunate that this requirement prevents access to the open internet.

Useful Live Chat, But It’s Not 24/7

PrivadoVPN advertises 24/7 live chat, but in practice availability is inconsistent. Sometimes responses are instant; other times it takes hours.

This can be frustrating. The ticket system works better — we submitted a ticket at 14:27 and received a helpful response at 16:07.

We appreciate that live chat is available to everyone, not just subscribers. However, having to enter your name, email, and category before starting a chat is inconvenient.

PrivadoVPN live chat

PrivadoVPN live chat forces you to fill out your name and email.

We found the live chat responses helpful, but the agent was quick to close the conversation. By the time we checked the provided link, the chat had ended.

The website includes basic FAQs and setup guides, plus some privacy articles, but it falls short of the comprehensive support offered by services like Astrill.

Features We’d Like to See

PrivadoVPN is safe, but it needs more robust security and privacy tools to compete with top-tier VPNs. We’d like to see:

  • First-party DNS servers so PrivadoVPN handles DNS requests instead of your ISP.
  • Multi-hop servers for an extra layer of security.
