VPN Unlimited: Solid Streaming, So-So Speeds, and Weak Privacy

VPN Unlimited from KeepSolid is a mediocre VPN, scoring 5.5 on our testing methodology. It provides decent local speeds and can bypass censorship in China. It also unblocks US Netflix, HBO Max, and BBC iPlayer, and it’s easy to use. However, it’s not the most trustworthy service: it temporarily logs your real IP address and hasn’t been independently audited. We also don’t recommend it for torrenting.
- Pros
- Fast speeds
- Easy access to streaming sites
- Servers for P2P torrenting
- Easy set-up on all major platforms
- Connect to 50 countries
- Lifetime subscription available
- Cons
- Collects too much information
- Based in New York (US jurisdiction)
- Short money-back guarantee
- Hasn't been independently audited
VPN Unlimited is a decent VPN that offers quick speeds across its server network. It also provides dedicated servers for streaming and P2P.
It’s a relatively basic VPN aimed at beginners, so don’t expect advanced features and functionalities that the very best VPN services offer.
However, VPN Unlimited is secure enough, with AES-256 encryption and an effective VPN kill switch.
KeepSolid VPN Unlimited’s strongest area is unblocking streaming services. In our latest tests, the VPN worked with US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, HBO Max, and more.
But when it comes to your online privacy, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is not as strong as it first appears. We can’t recommend it for anonymity due to its disappointing logging policy and US jurisdiction.
Overall, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is an above-average VPN that mainly suits beginners who want to unblock streaming content. But there are better and more well-rounded options available.
Privacy
Ranked #37 out of 61 VPNs for Privacy
VPN Unlimited logs too much unnecessary data, especially compared to true no-logs competitors like Private Internet Access and PrivateVPN. It logs your real IP address and the server IP address during your session, then deletes them once you disconnect. Combined with VPN Unlimited’s US jurisdiction, this makes it hard for us to recommend.
| Originating IP Address | Yes |
|---|---|
| Browsing Activity | No |
| Individual Connection Timestamps | No |
| Date of Last Connection | No |
| VPN Server IP | Yes |
| Device Information | Yes |
| Individual Bandwidth Usage | Yes |
| Account Information | Yes |
You can read VPN Unlimited’s full privacy policy on its website.
VPN Unlimited is owned and operated by KeepSolid Inc. It was founded in 2013 by Oleg Bocharnikov and Vasiliy Ivanov, who started what was then called Simplex Solutions in Odessa, Ukraine.
KeepSolid Inc. is now incorporated in the US, with its headquarters in New York.
This isn’t ideal. Being based in the US means law enforcement can compel the company to log and hand over customer data.
In its privacy policy, VPN Unlimited states it will hand over personal data to comply with applicable laws.
We’re reassured that VPN Unlimited only stores personally identifiable information (your IP address) for the duration of your session.
However, it’s concerning that data can be handed over without your consent. VPN Unlimited is not a VPN for total anonymity.
Streaming
Ranked #21 out of 61 VPNs for Streaming
VPN Unlimited unblocks most major streaming services, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. That’s a lot of new content. It’s one of the better VPNs for bypassing geo-restrictions.
| Streaming Service | Works with VPN Unlimited |
|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer (UK) | Yes |
| DAZN (Canada) | No |
| Disney+ (UK) | Yes |
| Hulu (US) | Yes |
| ITVX (UK) | No |
| HBO Max (US) | Yes |
| Netflix (US) | Yes |
| Netflix (UK) | No |
| Prime Video (US) | Yes |
| Sky Go (UK) | No |
VPN Unlimited is a good choice for unblocking streaming platforms, especially compared to other mid-range VPNs such as Avast SecureLine.
Thanks to its optimized servers, VPN Unlimited provides quick, hassle-free access to Amazon Prime Video, US Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, and Hulu.

VPN Unlimited consistently unblocks US Netflix.
VPN Unlimited also offers dedicated streaming servers for:
- ESPN+
- Hotstar
- Popcornflix
- Rai.tv
- Sony Crackle
We’ve had no problems unblocking streaming services with VPN Unlimited. It’s extremely consistent—one of the most reliable mid-range VPNs for streaming.
Speed
Ranked #38 out of 61 VPNs for Speed
According to our recent tests, VPN Unlimited delivers decent speeds but doesn’t match the fastest VPNs. We recorded an average 29% speed loss on local connections, putting it on par with lower-tier VPNs like PureVPN and X-VPN. Its international speeds are also disappointing, averaging 71Mbps—among the slowest international averages we’ve recorded.
Here’s a table showing VPN Unlimited’s speed test results:
| No VPN (New York) | US (New York) | Canada (Toronto) | US (Los Angeles) | UK (London) | Germany (Berlin) | Brazil (São Paulo) | Japan (Tokyo) | South Africa (Johannesburg) | Australia (Sydney) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server Location | ||||||||||
| Download Speed | 100Mbps | 91Mbps | 99Mbps | 89Mbps | 89Mbps | 92Mbps | 40Mbps | 85Mbps | 49Mbps | 45Mbps |
| Upload Speed | 100Mbps | 91Mbps | 90Mbps | 49Mbps | 79Mbps | 50Mbps | 9Mbps | 53Mbps | 13Mbps | 17Mbps |
| Ping | 1ms | 6ms | 14ms | 68ms | 73ms | 91ms | 473ms | 143ms | 254ms | 221ms |
| Distance | 0mi | 5mi | 300mi | 2,500mi | 3,500mi | 4,000mi | 4,800mi | 6,700mi | 8,000mi | 9,900mi |
As the data shows, VPN Unlimited has relatively slow local and international speeds. It’s not the slowest VPN, but it falls behind competitors that consistently reach above 90Mbps.
Specific weak points include speeds to Brazil (40Mbps) and Australia (45Mbps). While these locations are far from our US test base, other VPNs like Hotspot Shield record higher average international speeds around 71Mbps.
To put KeepSolid VPN Unlimited’s speeds in context, here’s a chart comparing its local and international speeds to other VPNs:

Decent Ping Times
KeepSolid VPN Unlimited has decent ping times, averaging around 6ms on a local New York connection and 73ms to the UK.
But it lacks the download speeds to make it ideal for gaming. Overall, there are cheaper VPNs that deliver better speeds and lower latency.
Security
Ranked #35 out of 61 VPNs for Security
VPN Unlimited includes the essentials we expect from a VPN, plus some useful security features. There’s a kill switch, WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols, its own proprietary protocol, and strong AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption. We detected no IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks.
| Independent Audit | No |
|---|---|
| VPN Kill Switch | Yes |
| Leak Protection | Yes |
VPN Unlimited has solid security features. Experienced users may find advanced options lacking.
KeepSolid Wise TCP/UDP is a proprietary protocol that uses TCP port 443, the same port as HTTPS traffic.
In practical terms, this makes it harder for ISPs and government censors to detect VPN usage, because your traffic looks like normal web browsing.
Secures Your Traffic with Industry-Standard Encryption
We recommend selecting OpenVPN or WireGuard where possible.
VPN Unlimited’s encryption is strong. AES-256 is a top-tier cipher considered unbreakable. The US federal government uses it, so you can trust its robustness.
VPN Unlimited also includes a kill switch, which blocks online traffic if your connection drops, preventing your true IP address from being exposed.
However, VPN Unlimited could improve by providing its own DNS servers. It currently uses Google Public DNS, which still offers a high level of performance and security.
VPN Unlimited also has a DNS Firewall feature that protects you from malicious websites, phishing pages, malware, and pop-up ads. This is now a separate service you must purchase on top of your VPN subscription.
We did not detect any DNS leaks while using VPN Unlimited. You can test it yourself using our leak test tool.
Server Locations
Ranked #27 out of 61 VPNs for Server Locations
VPN Unlimited has 500 servers across 50 countries. This is a respectable network. It’s far from the largest, but it’s a good spread that should suit most users. It also offers a decent number of city-level options.
| Continent | Countries with Servers |
|---|---|
| Europe | 34 |
| Asia | 10 |
| North America | 4 |
| South America | 3 |
| Africa | 3 |
| Oceania | 2 |
VPN Unlimited covers the most popular locations across 50 countries.
But if you need access to servers in less common regions, there are better services for that.
In terms of individual servers, VPN Unlimited has a relatively small number—just over 500.

VPN Unlimited has a decent sized server network.
Customer support refused to disclose the number of IP addresses, saying it’s against policy. This suggests there may not be many more than 500.
This is disappointing compared to the 50,000+ IPs offered by some rivals (VyprVPN, for example, claims over 200,000). Servers may become congested, resulting in poorer performance.
In the US, the coverage is good. Thirteen city locations span the East Coast (Florida) to the West Coast (California) and the South (Texas).
Likewise, there are good European options, with city-level servers in the UK, France, and Germany.
Asia coverage is decent, with servers in Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea, and one bridging the continental divide in Turkey. South America is limited to Brazil and Chile, and Africa’s only option is South Africa.
VPN Unlimited also withdrew its India servers following the introduction of data-retention laws, which was a good move.
User Experience
Ranked #45 out of 61 VPNs for User Experience
We like VPN Unlimited’s design and layout. You can change your protocol easily and switch on the DNS Firewall with a single toggle. The app isn’t overbearing or too technical.
VPN Unlimited’s custom apps are sleek and user-friendly.
The desktop app’s main screen displays your connection status, chosen server location, and a button to view your new IP address on a world map.
It would be better if the interface were a bit more compact, but it’s far from the worst we’ve seen.
Advanced settings are behind the burger menu (three horizontal lines) and are neatly laid out, with helpful explanations of the different VPN protocols.
You can turn on the kill switch in the settings menu (and we recommend you do), but DNS leak protection is tucked away in the protocols menu, which is a bit confusing.
We love that you can search for a server rather than scrolling through a long list, and there’s a dedicated tab for streaming-optimized servers. Want to watch Netflix? VPN Unlimited makes it easy.
Servers that allow torrenting are clearly marked, making them easy to find.
Torrenting
Ranked #40 out of 61 VPNs for Torrenting
VPN Unlimited is a poor VPN for torrenting. Popular torrent sites are banned on US servers. It only has three torrenting servers, and all of them deliver a very slow average bitrate. Its logging policy also doesn’t guarantee privacy while file sharing.
| Torrenting Attribute | VPN Unlimited |
|---|---|
| Permits P2P Traffic | Yes |
| Average Download Bitrate | 4.1MiB/s (59% loss) |
| Countries with P2P Servers | 49 |
| Port Forwarding | No |
| Kill Switch | Yes |
| Logging Policy | Identifiable Data |
VPN Unlimited’s streaming performance is strong, but not its torrenting. Its average bitrate is 4.1MiB/s. In comparison, ExpressVPN records 9.4MiB/s on the same test line.
Torrenting Websites Banned on US Servers
On January 13, 2022, VPN Unlimited agreed in US court to “block BitTorrent traffic” and to block access to major torrenting websites on its US servers. The company had been accused by film studios of encouraging subscribers to violate copyright law.
As of March 15, 2022, our tests confirm the ban is enforced. The websites listed in the image below are blocked via firewall when connected to a US VPN Unlimited server. California and New York P2P-dedicated servers have also been removed.

Excerpt from KeepSolid’s Stipulation of Dismissal stating they would block BitTorrent on US servers.
Only three VPN Unlimited locations permit torrenting:
- Ontario, Toronto (Canada)
- Paris (France)
- Bucharest (Romania)
If VPN Unlimited allows torrenting, it does so reluctantly. In its FAQ, VPN Unlimited says: “The primary use of KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is not to download torrents, but to offer online security.”
We recommend checking out IPVanish if you want more torrenting server options.
On the plus side, the service includes a kill switch that can prevent your IP address from leaking if VPN Unlimited disconnects.
Device Compatibility
VPN Unlimited can be installed on a fair number of devices and platforms, including Windows and macOS. There are also apps for Linux, and you can use the VPN on a router to protect Smart TVs.
| Windows | Yes |
|---|---|
| Mac | Yes |
| iOS | Yes |
| Android | Yes |
| Linux | Yes |
| Amazon Fire TV | No |
| Android TV | No |
| Apple TV | No |
| Router | Manual Setup Only |
| Chrome | Yes |
Simultaneous Connections: 5
You can also buy pre-configured Wi-Fi routers with the software already installed, saving you from setting up multiple apps on individual devices.
There are step-by-step instructions for manually configuring your existing router to support the software. These guides are user-friendly and include plenty of helpful screenshots.
Games Consoles & Streaming Devices
We’d like to see native apps for these in the future—apps designed for specific consoles and streaming devices—especially since rivals like Windscribe offer them.
Still, VPN Unlimited allows up to five devices to connect simultaneously on one subscription, which is handy.
Also helpful are the extensive manual setup guides for many of these devices in VPN Unlimited’s support section.
It’s rare for a provider to offer so many manual workarounds for such a wide range of streaming devices, and we appreciate that VPN Unlimited makes the process as simple as possible. VPN beginners rejoice!
Browser Extensions
VPN Unlimited supports more browsers than most VPNs, which usually offer extensions for Chrome and Firefox only, if at all.
Be aware that proxies are not VPNs—they’re unencrypted connections. But they’re useful for lightweight browsing while hiding your IP and changing your apparent location.
VPN Unlimited’s browser extensions are easy to download and use, available within seconds if you already have the main program installed.
They also include a WebRTC Leak Blocker to prevent a browser issue that could expose your true IP address. That’s helpful, though we think it should be standard.
Additional Features
For additional features, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited offers split tunneling, an ad blocker, SOCKS5 proxy servers in the US, Netherlands, and Singapore, and a trusted networks feature to keep you safe on public Wi-Fi. You can also get a dedicated IP address for an extra fee. VPN Unlimited has a convenient live chat for quick answers.
| Additional Feature | VPN Unlimited |
|---|---|
| Split Tunneling | Yes |
| VPN Obfuscation | Yes |
| Multi-Hop Servers | Yes |
| Dedicated IP | Yes |
| Ad Blocker | Yes |
| SOCKS Proxy | Yes |
Select Apps to Bypass VPN with Split Tunneling
VPN Unlimited offers split tunneling on Windows and Android, so you can select apps to bypass the VPN. The feature is easy to find in the app, though its description could be clearer.
Effective AdGuard Custom DNS Feature
VPN Unlimited’s ad blocker uses AdGuard’s custom DNS servers. As shown below, it blocks around 79% of online ads, which is solid for a VPN. However, this custom DNS feature isn’t available on every device.
